Origin of the FOGDEN name
This is a topographical name derived from 'folk of the dene'.
Dene is an old English word meaning valley so it describes people who lived in a valley.
It can also appear as dean which is quite common today. Taking Brighton where I was brought up there are areas named Bevendean, Coldean, Ovingdean, Rottingdean, Roedean, Saltdean, Withdean & Woodingdean.
